Product Overview

Cloud spend grows faster than the discipline to manage it. Bills arrive per provider, in different formats, at different grains, and the people accountable for them rarely have a single, allocatable view. FinOps — the practice of bringing financial accountability to variable cloud spend — closes that gap. KOSTRA gives you a platform to run that practice across every provider you use, delivered as a fully managed SaaS or self-hosted in your own environment.

The problem KOSTRA solves

Most cost tools cover the largest providers well and leave the rest as a blind spot. For organizations whose estate spans several clouds, that gap sits exactly where spend is often growing fastest and governance is weakest. KOSTRA closes it with the broadest provider coverage in the category — AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Huawei Cloud — so no meaningful part of your estate goes unmeasured.

Three engines, one platform

KOSTRA organizes its capabilities into three engines that share the same underlying evidence.

Visibility and optimization

The visibility engine ingests billing from each connected provider, normalizes it into a common expense model, and enriches it with resource discovery and provider metrics. On top of this, KOSTRA runs more than a dozen recommendation modules — abandoned resources, unattached volumes, idle IPs, obsolete snapshots, rightsizing, reserved-capacity opportunities, and more — that surface concrete, dated savings. Chargeback and allocation rules let you attribute shared spend to the teams, projects, and business units that incur it.

Workload modernization

Optimization tells you how to spend less on what you run. Modernization asks whether you should run it that way at all. KOSTRA’s modernization engine discovers what actually runs inside your virtual machines — without agents or SSH — fingerprints each workload into evidence-backed findings, and maps them to the 6 R’s (rehost, replatform, refactor, repurchase, retire, retain). Every recommendation is deterministic and traceable to observed evidence, and KOSTRA can generate starter Terraform for the target architecture.

AI-assisted insights

KOSTRA can narrate modernization findings in plain language using a large language model you configure and control. Today this uses a provider you choose — Anthropic, OpenAI, or DeepSeek — with your API key stored encrypted and never shared, and support for additional models is planned. The model only explains and ranks the numbers the engine has already computed; it never invents metrics.

Where KOSTRA fits in your governance strategy

KOSTRA sits between your cloud providers and your finance and engineering teams. It is the system of record for what your cloud costs, who owns it, and what to do about it. It complements — rather than replaces — provider-native billing consoles, budgeting tools, and IaC pipelines, giving you a provider-neutral layer for accountability and decisions.

When to use KOSTRA

Choose KOSTRA when you need one platform that covers your entire multi-cloud estate — including providers that other tools miss — and when you want optimization and modernization to draw on the same evidence. Use the managed SaaS to get started quickly, or self-host when data residency or policy requires it. If your estate is single-cloud and you are satisfied with that provider’s native tooling, a narrower tool may suffice — see Comparing KOSTRA for an honest view.
